When it comes to packing for a big move, all boxes and packing methods are not created equal. How you pack small stuff will differ from how you pack the big things. Also, if something is fragile and small, it requires some extra steps to ensure that it gets to your new home safely. Consider these top tips when packing small, delicate things while preparing for your move.

Gather All the Right Materials

To pack delicate items correctly, you need to have a variety of specific packing materials on hand. You may ask your mover if they have packing supplies for sale. Home improvement stores, big box stores, and even drug stores will often have the moving materials you need. Gather these items for packing the small stuff:

  • Packing tape
  • Transparent tape
  • Small scissors
  • Bubble wrap
  • White tissue paper
  • Multi-colored tissue paper
  • Cardboard
  • Small boxes
  • Box dividers
  • Black markers (with various tip sizes)
  • Box labels
  • Fragile label stickers

If you gather these items before you start the packing process, it will be much easier than finding that you don't have a necessary item.

Keep Small, Fragile Things Together

When you are a small, fragile item, don't simply wrap it carefully and stick it in another box with bigger things. Even if you put the small item on top, things can and do easily shift while they're being handled multiple times during the move. Sticking small things in with larger items simply makes them vulnerable to breakage.

While you are packing your home, you may save all the small, fragile things for last. After all, you may come across more delicate, small items as you clear out drawers, old boxes in the closet, and other storage places. Waiting until you are sure you have all your delicate items in one protected place can give you greater peace of mind during the move.

Take Inventory of Your Small Stuff

Once you have gathered all the small things you are planning to pack, be sure to make a list of all these items. While making your inventory list, place a checkmark by each item after you've packed it and another section mark when the item has been unpacked. That way, you can carefully make sure that each item made it to your new destination safely.

If you notice that something is missing or broken, contact your mover right away for answers on how you should proceed. The fragile items should make it to your new home without any problems as long as you've properly packed them and handled them with care.

Wrap Each Item Twice

Make sure that you have plenty of bubble wrap on hand for double-wrapping delicate items. That can offer added protection when boxes are moved and items may hit up against each other. Wrap each item in bubble wrap, then use transparent tape to tape the bubble wrap around the item. Next, repeat that step until the item is covered twice in bubble wrap.

After wrapping these items carefully, put them all together in a box, and label it as fragile. Make sure that your movers know that these items are small and delicate. If you have special requests for their care, let your movers know.
