One recommendation you may have been given prior to your move is to use standard-sized moving boxes. They are designed to take on the weight of your belongings without breaking, and they will easily stack on each other in the moving truck for optimal space saving.
However, you will have a few things in your home that do not fit in a standard box. Here is what you should know about preparing those items for the move.
Getting your television to your new place may seem more challenging than you think. This is one item that you do not want to move without a little bit of preparation.
Disconnect and Store All Cables
Chances are that you have all types of wires plugged into your TV, such as HDMI cords, coax cables, and audio cables. These items will need to be disconnected before the move. While you may think that it is easier to just leave them plugged in, it is possible that the cords could apply pressure to the port during the move. This will result in the ports being broken and lead to an expensive repair to fix them.
If you want to stay organized, disconnect each cord and wrap them up with a rubber band. You can even group similar cords together in a plastic bag so that they are all in one place. This will make it easier to set up your television once you get to your new place.
Protect the Television Screen
The television screen is one part that will be very expensive to replace if broken. You can protect the screen by attaching a piece of cardboard to the front of the TV. Just take a large moving box that has been cut open and secure it in place by wrapping tape around to the back of the TV.
If anything sharp hits the TV during the move, then the cardboard will act as a cushion to prevent damage from happening. You can always wrap the TV in moving blankets as well for additional protection of the screen.
Find a Specialty Moving Box
You most likely did not hold on to the box that the TV came in. However, you are not completely out of luck. Your moving company may be able to supply you with a box that is designed specifically for moving TVs. You could also ask your local electronics store if they have an extra box for a TV that they will be throwing away. If it is close in size, then it could work.
Houseplants are another item that is difficult to move, but you may still want to take them with you.
Look into Restrictions
Start by finding out if there are any restrictions when it comes to moving your houseplants across state lines. You may be surprised to learn that Arizona, California, and Florida have some strict restrictions about what you can take with you because diseases from plants in other regions could be harmful to the state you are moving to.
You will have to leave the plant behind if it is restricted. Consider giving it to a friend or family member to take care of it.
Use a Box for the Pot
The main concern about moving a plant is that it will tip over in transit and cause a big mess. You can avoid this by wrapping the pot in a plastic bag so it is sealed tightly.
Place the pot into a box that is as close to the size of the pot as you can find, and then fill the surrounding material with newspaper or packaging material to fill in the space. Mark the box so it is clear that a live plant is inside so that your movers are careful with it. The wide base of the box should provide additional protection from tipping or being crushed.
